Happy Birthday, Lousia Belle and Grant!

(Update: Whoops!  We are celebrating TWO special people today!)

Today (May 1) is the birthday of two important people in our family.

In 1847 Lousia Belle McKercher was born on this day in Argyle, New York. (Yes, her name is spelled "Lousia" instead of "Louisa"--see photo of her headstone below).  She married Nathan B. Gilkerson on Feb. 22, 1878. Three years later, as a midwife, she attended the birth of a little boy on August 30, 1881.  No one in our family knows any details about his parentage, but the mother was unable to keep her son, and Lousia Belle and Nathan decided to adopt him, and he was named Chester Arthur.

How wonderful that 130+ years later, a midwife in our own family, married to Chester's great-grandson, similarly adopted a sweet baby after attending that birth.  What a heritage of love!

And 166 years after Lousia came into the world, our darling Grant Arthur Keylock (who shares the middle name of Lousia's son) was born on her birthday.  Today he is ONE!!!

Happy 1st Birthday, Grant!

Cool! I love that connection from her to Mark and Kim. Also, how neat that Chester Arthur's great great grandson, Grant Arthur, was born on Lousia's birthday! I didn't know that, but how cool!
